In my example animation I am going to do a simple animation of an aircrafts yoke and column. There are four parts here, two of which are the visible geometry and two are small boxes hidden inside the visible geometry.

The first thing I have done is to be sure all of my objects pivot points are aligned to the world, XForm Reset and stacks collapsed as I explained in the Basic Aircraft Animations tutorial.
 
With the Yoke selected, click on the Link icon.
Next click on the Select by Name icon.
 
Select the lever_stick_l_r object from the list in the Select Parent window and click on the Link button.
 
 

IMPORTANT!!! Click off the Link icon.

Next click on the Select by Name icon again and select the lever_stick_l_r object. This is what we are actually going to animate.
