Making Scenery Plans for gMax: Page

Next zoom out so you can get the whole area you want to work on in the screen and take a screen shot.(Print Screen key). Close the sim and open your image editing program. We want to paste the contents of the Clipboard, our screen shot, into a new image. I use Corel Photopaint 8, so I simply click on New From Clipboard and I have a new image file that is exactly the size of my screen. 1024 x 768 in my case. Using your programs cropping tools, trim away any excess image. Zoom in and split hairs, use the edges between the blue and red lines to go by. You only want exactly whole cells. As you can see, my image has 12 full cells, 4 across and 3 vertically and measures 447 pixels wide and 353 pixels high. Don't worry that the quality is not to great. This first image is just to get some starting proportions. I save the file in JPG format and in a convienent directory and named this image CW_cell_grid.JPG. In fact, now is a good time to setup a project directory to keep everything related to this project in. I'll make a directory in my C:\gmax\gamepacks\FS2002\scenes directory and name it Central_Wisconsin. |

| I close the imaging software and open gMax. With the top viewport active I am going to make a simple plane. It's dimensions for right now are the same as my JPG file only in feet and I have it divided into segments that coinside with the cells, 3 length segs and 4 width segs. Check the "Generate Mappin Coords box. Now I make a new Mulit-Material and define the CW_cell_grid.JPG as a diffuse texture. Why Mulit-Material? You'll see in a bit. Apply the material to the plane and be sure you have the Show in Viewport button on. Now I save the project in my C:\gmax\gamepacks\FS2002\scenes\Central_Wisconsin directory as Central_Wisconsin_Grid.gmax. | |
